2015 Asian Film Academy Dean Confirmed& Calling for Applicants


Busan International Film Festival’s 11th Asian Film Academy (AFA), the educational program dedicated to fostering new talents from Asia, announced the dean and faculty members for 2015.


Director WANG Xiaoshuai, Confirmed as 2015 AFA Dean!


Director WANG Xiaoshuai from China has been named as Dean of AFA 2015. Known for illustrating the dark sides of the Chinese society through the eyes of today’s younger generation, Director WANG has expanded his reputation with his works including (2001), which received the Silver Bear Award from the 51st Berlin International Film Festival, (2010), which was invited to the 63rd Cannes competition section, and (2014), which was invited to the 19th Busan International Film Festival last year.


In addition to Director WANG Xiaoshuai, Anthony CHEN, a young Singapore director, was selected as directing mentor. Director CHEN received the Golden Camera award at the 66th Cannes Film Festival with his directorial debut, (2013).

Moreover, OH Seok-geun, the Director of Busan Film Commission and deputy dean of AFA since 2011, will continue supporting young fellows this year as deputy dean.

2015 AFA Now Accepting Fellowship Application until April 30!


Asian Film Academy is in its 11th year and calling for applicants until April 30. Producing 241 fellows from 29 countries, AFA provides an environment in which young filmmakers undergo a series of programs including hands-on experience in short film production, mentoring, workshops, and master classes to acquire the knowledge and philosophy of filmmaking. The program will run from September 24 (Thu) to October 11 (Sun). About Asian Film Academy

Asian Film Academy is an educational program hosted by Busan International Film Festival, Dongseo University and Busan Film Commission to foster young Asian talent and establish a network for Asian filmmakers. 24 young filmmakers from all over Asia are selected each year for 18-day filmmaking workshop, which takes place during the film festival season in Busan.

Previous AFA Deans have been appointed from the ranks of world-renowned filmmakers including Béla TARR, KUROSAWA Kiyoshi, HOU Hsiao Hsien, IM Kwon-taek, LEE Chang-dong, Mohsen MAKHMALBAF, Abbas KIAROSTAMI, and JIA Zhangke.

** 2015 Faculty Profile

Dean: WANG Xiaoshuai / Director/ China

Born in 1966 in Shangai, WANG Xiaoshuai graduated from Beijing Film Academy and is now one of China’s leading filmmakers from the Sixth Generation. His low-budget directorial debut (1993) and his acclaimed works including and expose the realistic dark shadows of history and social reality drawn over the daily life of today’s Chinese society. He continued directing (1996) under a pseudonym ‘Wu Ming (Without a Name),’ despite government censorship. (1993) and (1998) were invited to the 4th Busan International Film Festival and received much acclaims. Moreover, Director WANG received the Silver Bear Award at the 51st Berlin International Film Festival with (2001) and competed in the competitive section of the 63rd Cannes Film Festival with (2010).


Deputy Dean: OH Seok-geun / Director & Director of Busan Film Commission / Korea

Director OH Seok-geun debuted with the feature and directed st Proposition> (1993) and (2005). Now, as the Director of Busan Film Commission, he develops various businesses to build a production network between Busan and Asian countries. In 2010, he produced an omnibus film (2010) with Korean, Japanese, and Thai directors, which screened in the Busan International Film Festival’s closing ceremony the same year.


Directing Mentor: Anthony CHEN / Director / Singapore

Born in 1984 in Singapore, Director Anthony CHEN studied film in Ngee Ann Polytechnic and received his Master of Directing at National Film and Television School in United Kingdom. He continued his work with 6 short films including (2005), (2008), (2010), and (2011), with (2007) receiving Special Mention in the short film section at the 60th Cannes Film Festival. Moreover, his first feature (2013) received the Golden Camera Award in the 66th Cannes Film Festival and was introduced in over 20 distinguished international film festivals, receiving much praises as one of Asia’s promising directors.
