Asian Film Academy 2017 Finalizes Participants and Launches New Workshop and Scholarship

The Asian Film Academy (AFA), the educational program for fostering young Asian filmmakers finalizes this year’s 24 participants.

Largest number of Applicants Ever! Young Filmmakers in Asia Focus on AFA

361 Asian filmmakers applied for this year's AFA and 24 participants are selected including a participant from Bhutan for the first time in AFA. Applicants represent numerous Asian countries, with increasing numbers from Afghanistan, Brunei, and Pakistan. Especially, the number of Nepali applicants escalated dramatically comparing to previous years.

The 24 finalists will take part in AFA 2017 for 17 days, from October 6th to 22nd. Under the direction of Kore-eda Hirokazu, the dean of the 13th AFA, and mentors Boo Junfeng and Mahmoud Kalari, the selected fellows will participate in workshops, mentoring program, and other activities. The 24 fellows will also produce two short films during the period that will later be screened at the 22nd Busan International Film Festival.

Launching Scholarship and Pitching Workshop

Opportunities for Future Film Professionals to Participate in Industry Events!

ARRI, the world's leading manufacturer of professional motion picture equipment, will provide the ARRI Scholarship Award. ARRI joined AFA as sponsorship from last year and provided ALEXA Mini cameras for short film productions. As well as ALEXA cameras, this year ARRI will offer Scholarship to two fellows with an opportunity to visit the ARRI Main Office in Munich, Germany and to participate in the Training Program at ARRI.

AFA 2017 collaborates with Motion Picture Association (MPA) and will launch the Pitching Workshop, "BRIDGE TO HOLLYWOOD". After pitching competition at the workshop, two winners have the opportunity to visit industry events in the United States and Australia. The first place winner will attend a 5-day Film Immersion Program in Los Angeles, USA. The second place winner will be invited to Brisbane, Australia to attend the Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA).
